"I just wanted to say thank you."

"Hi Dr. Taffi, I'm not sure if you remember me ... I came to you over 2 years ago now. I was bulimic at the time. I can proudly say it's in my past - for 2 years now! I'm working on my presentation for our church's Women's Night. I'm speaking about my struggle with bulimia. This is my first time sharing with a large group. I am ready to turn my struggle into a tool to help others. Thank you for giving me this opportunity. You helped me put bulimia in my past. I'm now very involved in my church, the healthiest I've ever been, and getting married this Sept 16 and moving to Mexico City! So, thank you again for helping me get my life on track. You are truly amazing, I could not have done it without your help. You helped me get my life back." - B

Welcome

"I work with a wide range of emotional and behavioral issues providing individual, couple’s, and family therapy with a highly personalized and collaborative treatment style tailored to your unique needs to assist in achieving personal growth and lasting change. Change is a process that happens over time. I approach therapy as an interpersonal experience we share that emphasizes the healing properties of two or more people interactively working together as we make sense of your life in ways that are meaningful and specific to you.

It is my belief that we can change and transform ourselves at any stage in our lives.  This is accomplished by considering past experiences and connecting them to the here-and-now of your life, temperament, and relationships. Attachment style, separations, and losses beginning in childhood can influence one's personality; as do current contexts of living, loving, and working. I'm interested in mutually exploring the deeper reasons that difficulties keep repeating over and over with your participation in an ongoing dialogue to develop understandings about your life otherwise unavailable in ordinary conversation.

In our complex world, psychotherapy is a treatment for emotional discomfort or pain, an avenue for self-discovery and personal growth, and a means towards establishing and enhancing relationships with others and the world at large. Healing can take hold when two or more people join together to make meaningful sense of life. I hope you'll take this opportunity to contact me today."

  • An Eating Disorder Nonetheless

There is an eating disorder that exists that will not meet the clinical criteria for the better known Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and the like—however, it’s real and it very much exists for the individual struggling with the behavior. This “disordered eating,” otherwise known as Compulsive Overeating is oftentimes employed as a means of coping and can be equally disruptive to the person contending with the disorder. Read more.

  • To Live Without Regret

If you were to scan the history of your life—the choices you made along the way—the forks in the road not taken; would you indeed feel as though you had led a life without regret? It’s a recurring theme in my office for those who seek psychotherapy. Oftentimes, a current mood state is directly correlated with the consequences of a choice long since made (marital partner, children, financial woes, health issues, broken familial relationships, career paths, etc.). But, one cannot change the past—one only can affect the present which can potentially influence one’s future ... Read more.

  • Dropping “Weight”

Pounds. It’s a weighty subject. There are so many different kinds of “weight” that people carry on their backs, in their bellies, on their hips and thighs. However, what I am referring to is not isolated to just the physical manifestations of excess weight on the body. I am also referring to the burdensome weight that so many people struggle with in the form of emotional and psychological hurts, losses, trauma, debts, and the like. Read More.

  • Medication vs. Psychotherapy

It is documented and supported by the literature that the long-term solution for emotional duress and mental problems cannot be solved solely through the use of medication.  Psychotherapy is unique because it addresses the underlying cause of your pain and behavior patterns as opposed to symptom management which is a limitation of medication. That is why so many people have tried an arsenal of anti-depressant or anti-anxiety medications without permanent relief of their symptoms.Medicationcan be ahelpful adjunct, however, the long term benefit is questionable and therefore psychotherapy is thetreatment of choice for lasting change. • How Therapy Might Help

There are many reasons people make the choice to come into treatment. For some, it's the exhaustion of dealing with long-standing psychological issues, or symptoms associated with depression or anxiety. For others, it is in response to an unforseen life change such as a loss, career transition, move, or divorce. Personal growth and achieving a deeper sense of self-understanding is also a common goal of psychotherapy. Therapy can help address one or all of these issues since working with an experienced therapist who is the right fit for you can provide support, insight, and new perspectives on a multitude of life challenges. • Contemporary Psychoanalysis

When people ask me to explain what is Contemporary Psychoanalysis, I find this quote from Levenkron most helpful ... "the bottom line is that patients want to, need to be listened to. They want a therapist who can listen to them in depth....That is what psychoanalysis is, that is what we offer; we listen to people in depth, over an extended period of time and with great intensity."
